Paddles - Kayak   Choosing a kayak paddle may seem like a confusing process given the bewildering array of products available and the often confusing view and advice you will receive. The following is merely a guide to choosing a paddle. You must remember that there will always be exceptions, personal preferences, and other factors that may influence you choice. Please feel free to call if you require any further help.

Constructions

The construction materials used in a kayak paddle will determine the weight, durability, and performance or the paddle.

Low to Mid Priced Paddles (£30 - £60)
Will typically consist of an aluminium shaft with a plastic coating and some type of plastic blades including polypropylene, ABS, or RIM (Reaction Injection Moulding). They are typically used by beginners, recreational paddlers, clubs and centres or for introductory moving water use.

Mid Priced Paddles (£80 - £130)
Will typically have some type of composite glass fibre shaft with better quality plastic blades fixed in position. The blades will either be symmetric or asymmetric and have a smoother profile than those in the lower price range. They make for good touring and recreation paddles as they are lighter weight, and also for introductory/intermediate white water paddles.

Top End Performance Paddles (£130+)
usually constructed with a composite type of shaft and composite blade materials. These are the ultimate in light weight performance paddles that are very generally very strong although can be subject to wear and tear so they may need more maintenance care. There is a wide choice of constructions available and they are favoured by the more experienced white water paddlers and sea paddlers.

Specialist racing and competition paddles will most likely fall into this category, as will custom orders to your exact specifications.
